The 21 WYR was a battalion raised in Halifax from woollen textile workers. It trained in Skipton in early 1916, based at - most probably - the Raikeswood Camp previously built for the Bradford Pals (16 and 18 WYR battalions). The 21 WYR was a pioneer battalion so its primary role was labouring and construction. These men fell slightly short of the physical requirements of full combat units. Looking at them they do look slightly shorter in stature and, in some cases, older than standard recruits.
