Any photo with old Ship Hotel on is earlier than 1888, as witnessed by the date carved over the doorway of the new Ship Hotel at photo number 00028. Not to be confused with the Ship Inn at Mill Bridge, the other end of the High Street.

November 1888 the (old) Ship Hotel and adjoining properties were pulled down and set-back for street improvements. The New Ship Hotel has 1888 carved on its doorway. Thus the new Ship Hotel construction must have been mighty quick . . . just saying
