Carla Beck was a milk bar opened by Kenneth Hudson of Carla Beck Farm, Carleton, in an attempt to sell direct to the public and add value. This must have been in the late 1950s or early 1960s ?

Carla Beck was open throughout the 1940s. A small staircase at the rear lead to the cafe with about a dozen or so tables which were served by four waitresses. Downstairs the bar went the full lenth of the room. The favourite drink was hot chocolate sixpence a glass.
The shop to the left was Arthur English Electrics. Under the sign,at the right is the
entry to Chancery Lane photo 566.

I believe my Aunt, Hilda Beaver (nee Joy) was one of the waitresses in the 1940s.

My Mother, Elsie Marsden, nee Cooper, was cook here from 1952 until she became cook for Peter Blacks, off Swadford Street. I also worked here during school holidays and weekends.

The Carla Beck cafe was reputedly a wedding present, which was given to Kenneth & Helen Hudson by Kenneth Hudson's Father, Percy Hudson,
who at that time owned Carla Beck farm.
This was mentioned a few times by workers of the area, when I was a boy in the 1950s.

I remember Carla Beck from the 1940s. It was a popular place for teenagers to meet friends over a milk-shake. However, the prevailing aroma was Tomato Soup!
