My Mum, her sister and brother lived here in the 1920s. There was a groundsman who looked after the gardens where the ambulance station is now. He was a First World War army survivor but had ended up in the Workhouse, which the children's home was attached to under the old Poor Law. My uncle was once ill and taken to the Workhouse. Once recovered, he had to spend a week working in the Workhouse grounds digging potatoes. He would have been about 10.
